Kei Truck Dimensions Compared: Carry, Hijet, Acty, and Sambar
All four major import kei trucks are built to the same regulatory caps — 3,400mm length, 1,480mm width, 350kg payload. The result is that their exterior dimensions and cargo bed sizes land within millimetres of each other. But engine layout, height, suspension type, and bed floor height vary significantly across models. This page puts the verified numbers side by side.
Despite completely different engine layouts — front (Carry, Hijet), mid (Acty), and rear (Sambar) — all four trucks converge on near-identical cargo bed dimensions. The regulatory cap enforced the convergence. What the engine layout does affect is bed floor height, weight distribution, and overall vehicle height — none of which appear on most comparison pages.

The Acty is the lowest of the four at 1,735–1,745mm (2WD/4WD). The Sambar standard-roof is the tallest at 1,815mm — 80mm taller than the Acty. The Sambar high-roof variant reaches 1,860mm. For garage clearance under 6ft (1,830mm), the standard-roof Sambar clears by only 15mm.

All four models land on identical or near-identical cargo bed dimensions: 1,940mm long, 1,410mm wide. This is not coincidence — it is the result of all four manufacturers optimising toward the same kei regulatory cap. The regulatory cap enforces bed convergence; what varies between models is everything outside the bed.
⚠ Bed floor height: Confirmed only for the Hijet (655mm, from the Daihatsu official spec PDF). The Carry, Acty, and Sambar figures are not yet confirmed — bed floor height pending source-verified confirmation. These cells are intentionally left as "—" rather than estimated.
Engine layout and what it means for measurements
Suzuki Carry DA63T — Front engine, RWD/4WD
Engine under the hood, ahead of the cab. Bed floor is unobstructed by drivetrain components. Longest wheelbase of the four (2,350mm) gives the most stable platform under load. Full low-range 4WD available on most variants.
Honda Acty HA6/HA7 — Mid engine (under bed), RWD/4WD
Engine mounted transversely beneath the cargo bed. Raises the bed floor — confirmed higher than the Hijet's 655mm (exact figure pending). No conventional hood — engine accessed by lifting the bed floor panel. Lowest overall height of the four models (1,735–1,745mm). Mid-engine weight distribution (~45/55 F/R unladen) aids rear traction when loaded.
Daihatsu Hijet S200P/S210P — Front engine, RWD/4WD
Conventional front-engine layout. Bed floor height 655mm from ground — the only confirmed bed floor height figure in this comparison. Front engine means no drivetrain intrusion under the bed. Lowest ground clearance of the four (160mm) alongside the Carry — relevant for rough terrain or large obstacles.
Subaru Sambar TT1/TT2 — Rear engine (behind rear axle), RWD/4WD
Engine mounted behind the rear axle — unique in the import-era kei truck lineup. Only model with 4-wheel independent suspension; all others use solid rear axle with leaf springs. Rear-engine bias improves rear-wheel traction when loaded. Highest standard-roof height of the four (1,815mm). Supercharged TC variant is the highest-output engine option across all four models.

Payload is identical across all four models — 350kg is the kei regulatory maximum and all manufacturers spec to the cap. The weight variation is in the truck itself, not what it can carry.
Suspension type
Three of the four trucks — Carry, Hijet, and Acty — use a solid rear axle with leaf springs. The Subaru Sambar TT1/TT2 is the only import-era kei truck with 4-wheel independent suspension. In practice, the Sambar absorbs road inputs more evenly when loaded, which matters for fragile cargo and rough terrain. The trade-off is more complex suspension geometry — all four corners are independent components rather than a single solid axle assembly.
