Every Kei Truck Has These 4 Age Problems (and How to Check for Them)

The short answer
Every imported kei truck — regardless of model — should be checked on arrival for an overdue timing belt (if it has one), cooling system condition, road-salt rust at the frame and suspension mounts, and unknown brake history. None of these are design flaws; all four are cheap to check and most are cheap to fix.
These engines were built to run for decades, and the honest truth is that almost everything that goes wrong with an imported kei truck is age and neglect catching up with it, not a design flaw. The flip side is that all four of the problems below are well understood, cheap to check for, and usually cheap to fix if you catch them early. This page is the one to read before you read any other page in this database — everything else here is a deeper dive into one specific failure, and most of those failures are a variation on what’s below.
1. Overdue timing belts on interference engines
Mike Tanaka: Several of the most commonly imported kei truck engines — the Suzuki F6A, Honda E07A/E07Z, Daihatsu EF-series, and Subaru EN07 — are interference designs. That means if the timing belt snaps, the pistons and valves occupy the same space at the wrong moment, and you’re looking at bent valves at best and a full rebuild or replacement engine at worst.
The conservative replacement interval is around 60,000 km or 5 years, whichever comes first. If you can’t verify belt history on an imported truck — and on most imports, you can’t — the right move is to treat the belt as due on arrival, not to assume it’s fine because the truck “runs okay.” A belt that’s about to fail gives you almost no warning.
One important exception: the Suzuki K6A (1999-on) uses a timing chain, not a belt, and has no scheduled replacement interval at all. Don’t lump it in with the belt engines — it has its own wear item, covered on its own problem page.
Green flag
A seller who can produce a dated invoice for the timing belt replacement, or a truck recent enough that the belt is provably still within interval. That’s the only thing that actually de-risks this — not how the engine sounds.
Walk away if…
Don’t take “it runs fine” as evidence the belt is okay. Interference engines give you almost no symptoms before the belt fails. If history can’t be verified, budget for the belt now rather than finding out the hard way.
Indicative cost: roughly $200-400 in parts and labour for the belt job, versus roughly $1,500-2,500 for an engine rebuild or replacement if it fails first. ⚠️ The interval itself isn’t perfectly standardized across sources — some manuals and importers quote 80,000-100,000 km for the Acty specifically. Treat 60,000 km / 5 years as the safe number to plan around, not a universal fact for every engine.
2. Cooling system failures
Old hoses perish, radiator caps lose their seal pressure, and on some models the cooling circuit is prone to air-locking after any coolant loss. The generic symptom across all of them is the same: temperature climbing, or coolant slowly disappearing without an obvious external leak.
This is a check-on-arrival item for every model, but it’s worth a deeper look on two specific trucks where the layout makes it a bigger deal: the rear-engine Subaru Sambar, where a low coolant level can trap air pockets that the layout can’t self-purge, and the Daihatsu Hijet, where air-locking is one of the most commonly reported issues on the model.
Check at inspection
Check hose firmness, radiator cap seal condition, and coolant level and colour before you buy, and ask specifically whether the truck has overheated or needed a top-up recently. A truck that’s never needed coolant added is a good sign; one that “just needs a top-up now and then” is telling you something.
3. Rust from road salt
Tom Bradley: A lot of the kei trucks that come up for export spent their working life in Japan’s northern prefectures — Hokkaido, Tōhoku, Niigata — where decades of winter road salt do exactly what you’d expect to the underside of a vehicle. This is an import-condition issue as much as a mechanical one: it’s the kind of thing a domestic buyer would catch in person and an overseas buyer has to catch from photos and a sheet.
The places to check are frame rails, crossmembers, engine mounts, spring and leaf hangers, rocker and sill seams, floor pans (lift the mats, don’t just glance), bed corners, and cab corners.
Surface rust is treatable. Structural perforation near a suspension mount is a walk-away. On the Honda Acty in particular, frame and body rust repair can run high enough to exceed the truck’s value — it’s the one model where I’d be most insistent on a close look at this specific item before bidding.
Walk away if…
Visible perforation — actual holes, not just surface discoloration — at a frame rail, crossmember, or suspension/leaf-spring mount. That’s structural, and on a truck this size and value, it’s rarely worth the repair bill.

4. Unknown brake service history
Tom Bradley: Every kei truck import lands with essentially zero verifiable brake service history, no matter what the auction sheet says about overall grade. Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air over its life regardless of how it looks or feels, which lowers its boiling point and starts corroding hoses and cylinders from the inside. Drum hardware on these trucks can also seize from disuse during the export and shipping process.
The practical takeaway: treat a full fluid flush plus a hardware inspection as mandatory on arrival, not as an optional extra. Indicative cost is roughly $100-200 for a full refresh covering shoes, hardware kit, and fluid — cheap insurance against a system you genuinely cannot evaluate from a listing.
The on-arrival checklist
Before you drive an imported kei truck anywhere beyond the dealer’s lot, run through this:
- Confirm timing belt status — get documented history if the engine is a belt-driven interference design, or budget for replacement immediately if it can’t be verified.
- Inspect the cooling system — hoses, radiator cap, coolant level and colour; note any history of overheating or air-lock symptoms.
- Check for road-salt rust — frame rails, crossmembers, engine mounts, leaf-spring hangers, sill seams, floor pans, bed and cab corners.
- Flush and inspect the brakes — full fluid flush and hardware check, regardless of what the sheet says.
Check at inspection
Ask your importer to walk through this exact checklist before the truck ships, and again after it lands. Catching any of these four early is a parts-store bill. Catching them late can be an engine, a frame, or a brake system.
Verdict
Mike Tanaka: None of this is a reason to be scared off a kei truck. It’s a reason to be specific about what you check. These are some of the most over-engineered small engines on the road when they’re maintained — the failures that actually end these trucks early are almost always one of the four things above, caught too late.
