Daihatsu EF-SE / EF-VE
0.66 L (658 cc) · Inline-3, SOHC (EF-SE) / DOHC (EF-VE), 12-valve · Petrol — EFI (fuel injection on all S200P/S210P EF-SE/EF-VE variants)
Found in Daihatsu Hijet S200P and Daihatsu Hijet S210P — here is what to expect from the Daihatsu EF-SE / EF-VE on reliability, running costs, and what to check before you buy.
| Displacement | 0.66 L (658 cc) |
|---|---|
| Configuration | Inline-3, SOHC (EF-SE) / DOHC (EF-VE), 12-valve |
| Aspiration | Naturally aspirated (EF-SE / EF-VE in the Hijet truck). A turbocharged variant — EF-DET — exists in the Atrai van and kei cars but is not the standard Hijet truck fitment. |
| Power | 48 PS / 47 hp @ 5,900 rpm (EF-SE) — EF-VE slightly higher output |
| Torque | 63 Nm / 46 lb-ft @ 4,000 rpm (EF-SE) |
| Timing | Timing BELT — OEM belt part number 13514-87215. This is an interference engine: belt failure risks piston-to-valve contact. Always replace belt + water pump as a kit. The 9-piece kit (belt, water pump, gasket, thermostat, and seals) is the recommended approach on any used Hijet with unknown history. |

Overview
The EF-SE and EF-VE are the engines in the S200P and S210P generation Daihatsu Hijet — the trucks from the late 1990s through 2004 that are now entering US import eligibility under the 25-year rule. The EF-SE is the baseline SOHC unit; the EF-VE is the DOHC variant with slightly higher output. Both share the same fundamental architecture, the same timing belt service requirement, and the same parts pool. They are straightforward, well-understood engines with good long-term reliability — provided the timing belt is changed on schedule, which is the defining maintenance requirement. The EF-SE/EF-VE is not as well-known outside Japan as the Suzuki K6A, but Yokohama Motors stocks comprehensive parts including complete engine overhaul kits, making US ownership practical.
Strengths
- Proven reliability in commercial fleet use across Japan
- EFI on all variants — no carb to tune or clean
- Parts available from Yokohama Motors and specialist JDM suppliers
- Simple architecture — accessible for competent DIY mechanics
Weaknesses
- Timing BELT — not chain. Must be replaced on schedule. Belt snap = bent valves.
- Parts availability outside Japan is narrower than for Suzuki K6A
- 90% of Hijet problems are electronics-related (sensors, relays, wiring) — not the engine itself, but worth knowing for diagnosis
- Older examples (S200P) are now 20–25+ years old — age-related wear throughout is expected
Common issues
| Issue | Severity | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Timing belt failure | major | The single most important maintenance item on the EF-SE/EF-VE. OEM belt part number 13514-87215. Always replace as a 9-piece kit: belt + water pump + gasket + thermostat + seals. Change immediately on any used Hijet with unknown history — do not assume it was done. |
| Electrical / sensor failures | moderate | The most common Hijet owner complaint across the S200/S210 generation is electrical — sensors, relays, and wiring issues rather than the engine itself. Owner forums and the factory service manual both note that 90% of S200P/S210P problems are electronics-related. A Hijet that runs rough, stalls intermittently, or throws check-engine lights almost always traces to a sensor or relay rather than an internal engine issue. The NGK ignition coil (part number U5158, NGK stock 48526, OEM equivalent 90048-52126) is a common replacement item. |
| Ignition coil failure | minor | NGK U5158 confirmed for EF-SE and EF-VE in the S200P (December 1999–November 2004). Symptoms: rough idle, misfire, check-engine light. Replace as a set on high-mileage examples. |
| Oil leaks — valve cover and rear main seal | minor | Common on older examples. Valve cover gasket is a routine replacement. Rear main seal leaks are more involved but documented. Inspect underneath on any S200P/S210P purchase. |
Parts & servicing
Yokohama Motors is the primary US specialist for S200P/S210P EF-SE/EF-VE parts, stocking timing belts, complete engine overhaul kits, electrical components, and body parts. minitruckgarage.com also stocks Hijet-specific parts. Parts availability is narrower than for the Suzuki K6A but sufficient for committed owners with lead time.
How it compares
Compared to the Suzuki K6A: the K6A uses a timing chain (no belt service interval) and has a significantly wider US parts network. For long-term ownership simplicity, the K6A has a clear advantage. The EF-SE/EF-VE's main appeal is the Daihatsu Hijet platform itself — different truck geometry, different cab design, personal preference. Compared to the Honda E07Z: both are timing-belt engines from the same era; the E07Z has a longer production run and broader parts support. Compared to the newer KF-VE (S500P/S510P Hijet): the KF-VE is a generation newer, with VVT and better emissions — but the S500P is not yet 25-year import eligible in the US as of 2026.
