Overview
The K6A is one of the most widely produced and proven small-displacement engines in commercial use. In the Carry truck it is naturally aspirated and built for durability rather than power. The timing chain means there is no belt service interval, which is a major reason these engines so often reach high mileage on little more than regular oil changes.
Strengths
- Timing chain rather than belt — no scheduled replacement
- Simple, naturally aspirated design with few failure points
- Routinely passes 150,000 km with basic maintenance
Weaknesses
- Modest power — built for load, not speed
- Cam-cover gasket seep is near-universal past 80,000 km
- Chain tensioner can wear on high-mileage engines run on stretched oil intervals
Common issues
| Issue | Severity | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cam-cover gasket oil seep | minor | Common past 80,000 km. Cheap fix. Look for oil staining around the cover edge. |
| Water pump weep | moderate | Check coolant level and for residue around the pump housing. |
| Cold-start valve-train tick | minor | Common and usually harmless if it clears once warm. A persistent warm tick warrants investigation. |
| Timing chain tensioner wear | moderate | Rare with regular oil changes; more likely on high-mileage engines run on extended intervals. |
Parts & servicing
Service items and internals are stocked by specialist JDM importers in the US. The DA63T's long production run gives a deep global parts pool. Body panels are harder to source than mechanical parts.
How it compares
Compared with the Honda E07 series (Acty), the K6A is simpler to access and service thanks to its conventional front-engine layout in the Carry, where the Acty's mid-engine design complicates maintenance. Against the Subaru EN07 (Sambar), the K6A trades the Subaru's characterful supercharged variants for broader parts support and lower complexity.

Maintenance Schedule
Verified service intervals and part numbers for the Suzuki K6A. Items marked ⚠ Pending require part number confirmation before ordering.
| Item | Spec | Interval | Part number | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Engine oil | 5W-30 synthetic 2.8 L | 5,000 km or 6 months | — | Tiny capacity — never skip or delay. |
| Oil filter | Spin-on | Every oil change | 16510-81403 | Wix 57356 or Fram PH3614 equivalent. |
| Spark plugs | NGK KR7AI (standard) or DCPR7EIX (iridium) | 20,000 km standard / 40,000 km iridium | 09482-00527 | Qty 3. Iridium recommended for long-term. |
| Air filter | OEM DA63T | 20,000 km — sooner in dusty use | 13780-77A00 | Also crosses to 13780-81AA0. Verify fit before ordering aftermarket. |
| Alternator belt | Bando 4PK870 or equivalent | Inspect every service; replace at 60,000 km | 17521-65H10 | Also 17521-71J10. DA63T has two separate belts (alternator + AC) — not a single serpentine. Drives alternator; a snap causes loss of charging. Carry a spare. |
| AC belt | DA62T/DA63T specific | Inspect every service; replace at 60,000 km | ⚠ Pending verification | Second auxiliary belt (AC compressor). Verify part number for your specific build. |
| Coolant | OAT / Super Long Life (pink) 2.5 L | 5 years or 100,000 km | — | Do not mix with green conventional coolant. |
| Brake fluid | DOT 3 or DOT 4 | Test on arrival; flush every 2 years | — | — |
| Manual gearbox oil | GL-4 75W-90 | 40,000–60,000 km | — | ⚠ TODO-VERIFY exact spec for your variant. |
Intervals are for normal use. Shorten oil changes to 3,000 km for heavy hauling, dusty farm use, or frequent short trips. Always verify part numbers with your supplier before ordering.
