CVT (continuously variable transmission)

A continuously variable transmission — the smoothest, most fuel-efficient automatic available in kei trucks, but requires disciplined fluid maintenance and is not for heavy hauling.

How it works

A steel push-belt running between two variable-diameter pulleys, allowing infinite ratio variation between a low and high range. No fixed gear steps — the engine can stay at its optimal RPM continuously. Found in newer Hijet (S500P/S510P) and newer Carry (DA16T) generations.

Pros and cons

Advantages

  • Smoothest acceleration of any kei transmission — no gear shifts
  • Engine stays at optimal RPM — best fuel economy of any automatic type
  • Comfortable in stop-start city driving
  • Modern CVTs in the S500P/S510P and DA16T include a sport mode and manual paddle-shift simulation

Disadvantages

  • Most expensive to repair or replace if it fails — specialist work, high parts cost
  • CVT fluid must be changed on schedule — neglect is the primary failure cause
  • Not suitable for sustained heavy hauling or aggressive off-road use — CVTs overheat under prolonged high-torque low-speed loads
  • Not compatible with diff-lock or full low-range off-road capability
  • US buyers: most CVT-equipped Hijets (S500P/S510P, from 2014) won't be eligible for 25-year import until 2039

Change CVT fluid at the correct interval with the correct spec fluid — this is non-negotiable.
Overheating under load Major CVTs are not designed for sustained heavy hauling at low speeds. Pulling heavy loads up long hills, or extended low-speed off-road work, can overheat CVT fluid. Symptoms: burnt smell, limp mode activation (sudden power reduction), overheating warning. For heavy farm or trail use, a manual transmission is more appropriate. If you have a CVT kei truck, monitor fluid temperature and avoid prolonged high-load low-speed operation.
Belt wear (higher mileage) Moderate The steel push-belt is a wear item. Symptoms: slipping (engine revs rise without corresponding acceleration), whining or grinding. Belt replacement requires CVT removal and specialist work — budget $500–$1,500+ depending on parts and labour.
Incorrect fluid used Major Using generic ATF instead of the manufacturer-specified CVT fluid causes rapid belt and pulley wear. If a used CVT kei truck has had the wrong fluid used at any point, internal damage may already be present. Check service history carefully.

Recommended for

City and light farm use where smooth, automatic driving matters. Not for sustained heavy hauling or serious off-road. Check US import eligibility — most CVT kei trucks are not yet eligible.

How the CVT compares — and who should choose it

The CVT is the newest and smoothest automatic available in kei trucks. In city and light farm driving, the seamless ratio variation and high fuel efficiency are genuine advantages. The DA16T and S500P/S510P are also the newest generation of their respective models, bringing other modern refinements beyond the transmission.

Against the 4AT, the CVT is smoother, more fuel-efficient, and more refined. But it is also more expensive to repair if it fails, and it requires strict adherence to the correct CVT fluid specification and interval. A 4AT on neglected fluid is bad; a CVT on neglected fluid or wrong fluid can be a total transmission replacement.

Against the 5MT, the CVT loses in every off-road metric. Diff-lock and low-range are not available on CVT trucks. The CVT also is not suitable for sustained heavy hauling — heat kills CVTs. If farm or trail work is your plan, the 5MT is the right choice regardless of how smooth the CVT feels in a test drive.

The most important practical note for US buyers: most CVT-equipped kei trucks (S500P/S510P from 2014, DA16T from 2013) are not eligible for 25-year import until 2038–2039. Check eligibility before targeting a CVT model.
