Manual vs Automatic Kei Truck: Which to Buy?
The short answer
For off-road, farm, or trail use: manual. For city driving or drivers who can't drive manual: automatic. The manual maximizes the 660cc engine's limited power and is the only way to get diff-lock and low-range trims. The automatic trades some of that power and capability for convenience.

The off-road argument β the most important section
This is not a preference. It is a technical constraint.
Diff-lock (factory rear differential lock) and low range (super-low crawler gear) trims are only available with a manual transmission. Automatic-transmission kei trucks do not receive these features β period.
If you want a NΕhan-spec DA63T with the factory rear diff-lock and super-low crawler gear β or any other kei truck with a factory locker β you must buy a manual. The 5MT is not optional in this scenario. No amount of aftermarket work gives an automatic truck a factory diff-lock.
For buyers who want to use their kei truck on soft ground, muddy fields, steep hillsides, or genuine trail work, the manual is not just better β it is the only viable choice. An automatic 4AT truck in a muddy field without a locker is a much worse situation than a manual truck without a locker, because at least the manual can be used to engine-brake and rock the truck precisely. But a 4WD manual truck with a factory locker is in a different capability class entirely.

The power argument: 44hp is not a lot to spare
A kei truck engine produces between 38hp and 58hp depending on model, generation, and tune. The K6A in the DA63T makes 44hp. The E07Z in the Acty makes 45β53hp. These are not powerful engines.
A torque converter automatic absorbs a meaningful fraction of that output. In a full-size truck with 300hp, 15% parasitic loss through the torque converter is barely noticeable. In a 44hp kei truck, that same percentage loss is noticeable in every gear, on every hill, under every load.
The 5MT transmits 100% of the engine's output to the wheels. The 4AT transmits less. The CVT is more efficient than a stepped automatic β it keeps the engine closer to its optimal RPM continuously β but it still involves a belt drive rather than a direct mechanical connection. For buyers who plan to carry loads, climb grades, or work the truck hard, the 5MT's power advantage is real and consistent.
When automatic makes sense
The case for an automatic is honest and real, even if it is shorter than the case for a manual.
- β Drivers who cannot operate a clutch. Physical limitations, medical conditions, or a simple preference not to relearn manual β these are real. An automatic kei truck is still a capable, useful vehicle. The 4AT is proven and reliable with proper fluid maintenance.

CVT: smooth, efficient, and not for everyone
The CVT is found in the newest generation kei trucks β the Daihatsu Hijet S500P/S510P (from 2014) and the Suzuki Carry DA16T (from 2013). In city driving it is genuinely the best automatic experience: smooth, quiet, no gear-hunting, good fuel economy.
The cautions are real. CVT fluid must be changed on schedule with the exact manufacturer-specified CVT fluid β not generic ATF. Neglect is the number-one CVT failure cause. CVTs also overheat under sustained heavy hauling at low speeds β a farm truck towing heavy loads up long grades in low gear is working a CVT in exactly the conditions it is not designed for.
For US buyers specifically: most CVT-equipped kei trucks are not eligible for 25-year import until 2038 (DA16T) or 2039 (S500P/S510P). If you are in the US and buying for near-term import, the CVT question largely answers itself β the trucks that offer it are not yet available to you.
