Low range (Hi-Lo crawler gear)
Also called: super-low gear, crawler gear, extra-low, transfer-case low
Low range is a gear reduction that trades road speed for a large multiplication of engine torque, letting the truck crawl up steep or heavy ground at walking pace.
How it works
A gear reduction — a sub-transmission or a transfer-case low setting — that multiplies engine torque while lowering road speed, letting the truck crawl up steep ground or move heavy loads at walking pace.
When to use it
Steep climbs, heavy hauling at low speed, and precise low-speed control.
Don't use it when…
Low speed only — not for normal road driving.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Large torque multiplication
- Control on steep or heavy ground
- Reduces clutch and engine strain at low speed
Cons
- Low speed only
- Factory fitment limited (e.g. the Suzuki Carry manual Nohan)
- Usually not available on automatics
Compared to other systems
Against a diff lock: low range solves TORQUE and control, not traction. A truck can have one without the other; the best off-road spec has both — see the diff-lock-vs-low-range comparison.
See the full diff lock vs low range comparison for a side-by-side breakdown of these two often-confused systems.
The feature that gets confused with the diff lock — and is not the same thing
Ask three different kei truck sellers what "low range" does and you will likely get three different answers, most of them blurring it together with the diff lock. They are not the same feature and they do not solve the same problem. Low range is about torque and control: it is a gear reduction that lets the truck creep up a steep slope, hold a heavy load on an incline, or move at a crawl without riding the clutch — useful on a farm, a job site, or any steep driveway, whether or not the surface is slippery.
The buyer-relevant fact is that factory fitment is genuinely limited — on the Suzuki Carry, for example, it rides along with the manual Nohan spec, not the automatic. If low-speed, high-load work is part of why you want a kei truck in the first place, that narrows your search considerably, and it is worth confirming before you fall in love with a particular truck that turns out not to have it.
