Why a 2WD kei truck is often the smarter buy
Buyers shopping by spec sheet tend to assume 4WD is automatically the better truck. On a kei truck that is not necessarily true. A 2WD Carry or Hijet is lighter, sips less fuel, has fewer parts that can leak or wear, and usually costs less at auction — and for a truck that will spend its life on a driveway, a paved farm lane, or city streets, none of the extra hardware in a 4WD system ever gets used.
The honest question to ask yourself is not "would 4WD be nice?" but "will I regularly drive on loose, wet, or snowy ground where a 2WD truck would actually get stuck?" If the answer is no, a clean 2WD example is not a compromise — it is the more sensible truck, and the money saved is better spent on a higher auction grade or a better service history.
